January 2012 - Titanic 100 Cobh 2012 - Titanic Centenary New Years Day Event

2012 sees the centenary of the Titanic's only voyage and Cobh began celebrating this special year with an acknowledgment on New Year's Day.

Paying tribute to one of the biggest maritime events in the last 100 years, The Irish Navy berthed the LE Emer in Deep Water Quay, outside the Cobh Heritage Centre, and opened to the public. This was followed by a message from The Cobh Town Mayor and other dignitaries in the Promenade Band Stand and a poignant gun salute exchange between Spike Island and the LE Emer.

Following the salute, 123 flares were let off on Spike Island, each one representing one of the people that boarded the Titanic from Cobh on the 11th of April 1912.

The day proved a fitting start to this momentous year, which will see a series of events throughout 2012. See the Titanic 100 website for more.
