‘AN IRISH CONNECTION’ premieres in Cobh, Titanic’s last port of call from the 11th -14th April 2012 to coincide with the Titanic’s Centenary events in Cobh. The evening outdoor Gala Concerts tell the story of emigration and the Titanic’s connection with Ireland through music, narration, dance and song. Port of Cork to Host the First ‘Boat Jumble’ This Coming April 15th
On Sunday 15th April from 10am to 4pm, the Port of Cork will host a Boat Jumble on Custom House Quay. The Boat Jumble, which comes to Cork for the first time, is an open air market for the sale of boating, sailing and water sports equipment and accessories, both old and new. Second hand boats/dinghies, sails, engines and nautical “car boot” items will also be on sale.
The Boat Jumble format has a proven appeal for trade and “car boot” participants as a low cost way of reaching a high footfall of people interested in marine products and services. The Boat Jumble offers value, bargains and of course the unusual.
To sell at the Boat Jumble (trade pitch or “car boot”) pre booking is essential and restricted to marine related products and services. The booking form is on the web site www.BoatJumble.ie or www.portofcork.ie and must be completed before the day, in order to secure your place. As well as buying and selling, the Boat Jumble will also have catering on site and some light entertainment during the day. The RNLI will have a presence on the day and will provide a free check on Personal Flotation Devices (PFD). This is an important service to the boating public as the season commences.
The Boat Jumble is a great day for the boating public to find a bargain or that unusual kit suitable for your boat. For visitors hunting for bargains on the day, admission is €5 and supervised children are free. Due to the restriction of space there will be no on site casual car parking available, however there are city car parks available close by.

Royal Cork Lands Major Award before Cork Week 2012
Picture by Tim Wright @ photoaction.com (from the Cork Week website)
The Royal Cork Yacht Club has been awarded the accolade of being a 5 Gold Anchor marina as well as an ICOMIA (International Council of Marine Industry Associations) Clean Marina.
The Royal Cork becomes the first yacht club in Ireland to be awarded this prestigious title and it received the maximum number of anchors on its first assessment.
The scheme is designed for the marina consumer by The Yacht Harbour Association with contribution from the RYA, and helps boat owners make an informed decision on where to berth. This will help Cork Harbour realise it’s potential as a tourist destination for the leisure marine sector.
This is welcome news for the RCYC only a few short months before the start of Cork Week, the organization of which is gathering apace.
As well as a large Irish contingent, entries are being received from all over the world.
Sailing Logic’s Reflex 38 Tim Thubron, will skipper “Visit Malta Puma.” The Hamble-based sailor had a great start to the year with a class winning performance in the RORC Caribbean 600.
The J/109 Class will be holding the Irish National Championships at Cork Week and Greg Burgess’ Welsh J/109 “Bluejay” will be back to defend their Cork Week title.
In recent years, the Quarter Tonner Class has enjoyed a renaissance and, as such, a separate class looks likely for Cork Week.
The first Cork Week took place in 1978. Cork Week 2012 takes place at the Royal Cork Yacht Club, Crosshaven, Co. Cork from July 7th to 13th.

Irish Rail publish Cork to Cobh Railway book
Iarnrod Eireann has published a new book to commemorate the first train to Cobh 150 years ago. The line was opened by the Cork & Youghal Railway Company on 10th March, 1862 and served the deepwater port, then known as Queenstown, delivering trans-Atlantic ferry passengers and mail to the awaiting ships.
150 years later, the train is still a vital part of the infrastructure of Cork Harbour and continues to transport large numbers of passengers annually, including tourists visiting on cruise liners.
The anniversary was marked by the launch of the book, Cobh Connections, A Record of Railway Service, 1862-2012. There were also special family excursions on the day and everyone was treated to music, food markets and a photographic exhibition on their arrival in Cobh.
