Iarnrod Eireann has published a new book to commemorate the first train to Cobh 150 years ago. The line was opened by the Cork & Youghal Railway Company on 10th March, 1862 and served the deepwater port, then known as Queenstown, delivering trans-Atlantic ferry passengers and mail to the awaiting ships.
150 years later, the train is still a vital part of the infrastructure of Cork Harbour and continues to transport large numbers of passengers annually, including tourists visiting on cruise liners.
The anniversary was marked by the launch of the book, Cobh Connections, A Record of Railway Service, 1862-2012. There were also special family excursions on the day and everyone was treated to music, food markets and a photographic exhibition on their arrival in Cobh.
